Katherine Butler – Clinical Specialist in Hand Therapy

Katherine Butler is a Clinical Specialist in Hand Therapy. She established ‘London Hand Therapy’ in 2006 with the aim of providing first class private assessment and treatment of all hand and upper limb conditions. Katherine has been working in the specialist area of Hand Therapy since 1995 and is one of a few fully Accredited Hand Therapists (AHT) with The British Association of Hand Therapists. As a recipient of the highly prestigious Queen’s Trust Award Australia in 1998, she came to London to study and work with Dr Christopher Wynn Parry and Mr Ian Winspur in the area of performing arts medicine.

Her clinical experience has focused on plastic and orthopaedic surgery patients with hand and upper limb injuries, burns, and rheumatological conditions. She has lectured and published widely, established two hand therapy units, worked as a research therapist and is currently performing doctoral research with Dr Karin Rosenkranz in the area of Focal Hand Dystonia affecting musicians.

As a trained musician herself, completing her Associate Music Diploma in Flute performance in 1997, she enjoys combining her love for music and knowledge of the hand and upper limb. Katherine has invaluable insight into life and the related pressures of being a musician and lectures internationally.

Lucy Green – Senior Hand Therapist

Lucy Green is a Senior Hand Therapist and, prior to coming to London Hand Therapy, worked in the NHS as a Hand Therapist at University College Hospital. She has worked in the specialist area of hand therapy since 2004 with a focus on plastic surgery, orthopaedics and rheumatological conditions. Lucy has a keen interest in thumb conditions and injuries, reconstructive surgery and sports medicine.

Lucy herself is a keen sports player, competitively playing hockey and enjoying golf, tennis and snowboarding. She is passionate about guiding and supporting sports players to full recovery and returning them to their chosen activity – whether it is their career or a leisure pursuit.

Hand Therapy is both an art and a rehabilitation science for the upper extremity. The injured limb is evaluated and assessed, and a variety of treatment methods are used to achieve set therapeutic goals.

Hand therapists are qualified Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists who have become skilled in treating upper limb injuries and deformities through further education, training and clinical experience.
