Stage fright – an advantageous friend or despicable foe?

Many performers suffer from stage fight, particularly classical musicians where accuracy and virtuosic performances are required. Are swigs from a hip flask, valium or beta-blockers the best solution or is ‘making stage fright your friend’ a way of treating the cause rather than symptoms? Aaron Williamon, Head of the Centre for Performance Research at Royal College of Music,¬†discusses the two components to stage fright and gives some practical advice about how to manage it.
