Leon Fleisher and Focal Hand Dystonia

Leon Fleisher is a name often quoted along side Glenn Gould and Robert Schumann when discussing pianists affected by focal hand dystonia. Leon discusses how his life was changed when he developed the condition but how he never gave up on the idea of returning to concert performances using two hands. This article describes his feelings and the treatment techniques tried and three ‘new’ careers that developed whilst not being able to play with two hands: becoming a left handed concert pianist, conducting and teaching.
