Hearing loss in musicians

The risk of hearing loss for musicians is four times greater than that of non musicians. Whilst awareness and education are fundamental to managing the risks and mitigating exposure, there are ways for individuals to reduce daily exposure with minimal impact on their music.

Queensland Symphony Orchestra have been running a hearing conservation programme since 2005 and they are showing encouraging results 9 years down the line. Investigations into sound dynamics in concert halls, orchestral layout, use of rotational seating, risers and high quality bespoke earplugs have all led to the development of a number of ways to assist musicians to preserve their hearing.

Ongoing training in hearing conservation is essential, and whilst noise control programmes are mandatory in Europe the implementation of such programmes is not easy. To date no European programme has reported any positive impact but it is hoped that with an increase in awareness and training there will be less musicians affected in such a devastating way.

Carrot Clarinet!

This is brilliant and clever – I watched in awe as a carrot is turned into a clarinet using an electric drill and saxophone mouthpiece. Perhaps over the festive break you could try making an instrument!
